A Study Of Obesity A Persistent Problem For Most American People - 825 Words

A Study Of Obesity: A Persistent Problem For Most American People (Coursework Sample) Content: Mr C. – A Case Study of Obesity Alyssa Joy Villarosa May 5, 2018 Introduction Obesity has always been a persistent problem for most Americans. According to the Murray, Ng, and Mokdad (n.d.) about 160 million Americans are facing the problem of obesity. In spite of this, many Americans are still inclined towards the consumption of foods and beverages that are high in sodium, glucose, and fat. In turn, most of these people who suffers from this disease are significantly increasing their risk of developing cardiovascular diseases that are usually fatal. In this article, the case of Mr. C. would be analyzed, specifically in terms of the topic of obesity. Is bariatric surgery an appropriate intervention? According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (2018), bariatric surgery can increase the risk of having a hormonal imbalance but it helps a patient lose weight. This is done by reducing the amount of food that the stomach can accommodate which causes malabsorption of nutrients. Bariatric surgery is not recommended for this patient because the patient already suffering from a lot of known unknown conditions which might increase the risk of having a complication during a surgery. Aside from this, the condition can still be reversed in a natural way by doing regular exercise every day for at least 30 minutes, either bouts of 10 minutes or continuously and a healthy diet (low sodium, glucose, and fat diet). Peptic ulcer is the result of the ulceration caused by high acidity of stomach juices and/or the helicobacter pylori bacteria which causes inflammation of the stomach lining (Healthline, 2018). Obesity is defined as having a BMI of greater than or equal to 30 while a value of greater than or equal to 25 is considered as overweight. What are the health risks associated with obesity that Mr. C have? 1 Hypertension Mr. C’s BMI is computed as 45.4 kg/m2. An increase in weight due to fat and muscle mass requires an increase in the blood volume which in turn increases the pressure exerted to the walls of the arteries and therefore, increasing the blood pressure. The American Heart Association (2018) states that the normal blood pressure is less than 130/80 mmHg while his BP is 172/96mmHg which makes him hypertensive. Mr. C probably has a secondary hypertension because of the presence of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is characterized by severe snoring which increases the difficulty of getting enough oxygen for the cells. This results to the damage of the lining of the blood vessel walls which makes the blood pressure regulation less effective. 2 Diabetes The normal value of fasting blood sugar is less than 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L). Prediabetes is  from 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L). Mr. C has an FBS of 146 mg/dL which makes him diabetic ( or equal to 126 mg/dL) (Mayo Clinic, 2018). 3 Atherosclerosis Hypercholesterolemia in adults is characterized by a cholesterol level of greater than or equal to 190 mg/dL (Nall, 2018). Furthermore, Wedro, B. (2018) states that the normal triglyceride level is less than 150 mg/dL. Both of these are risk factors for atherosclerosis. * Plan an administration schedule that will be most appropriate and therapeutic to the patient Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide are antacids that help relieve heartburn, acid indigestion and stomach upset by decreasing the acidity of the stomach. 6:00AM Take Sucralfate/Carafate 500mg/5mL 7:00AM breakfast 10:00AMTake magnesium hydroxide/aluminum hydroxide (Mylanta) 15mL 11:00AMTake Sucralfate/Carafate 500mg/5mL 12:00NNLunch 3:00PMTake magnesium hydroxide/aluminum hydroxide (Mylanta) 15mL 5:00PMTake Sucralfate/Carafate 500mg/5mL 6:00PMdinner 9:00PM Take magnesium hydroxide/aluminum hydroxide (Mylanta) 15mL Take sucralfate/Carafate 500mg/5mL 10:00PMSnack Take sucralfate/Carafate 500mg/5mL Take Ranitidine (Zantac) 300mg * Assess Mr. C’s functional health patterns Mr. C is not informed that he needs a medical intervention for his obesity and the other risk factors. However, he is aware that he has a condition. He must be educated by a doctor or any medical practitioner that is knowledgeable about his case about the health risks that may affect his basic activities of daily living, and its short-term and long-term effects. He is also not aware of the possible side effects of the medications. Mr. C does not exercise regularly but he must do it to increase his cardiovascular endurance. He needs a guide, either a caregiver or a nurse, to guide him and to give him instructions since there is a great chance for non-compliance. He is also not cautious enough about his diet. What are the potential problems that you can identify? Describe at least five problems and give ration...
